Day 6 - A Roman history day

After a very nice breakfast of fried eggs and the thickest bacon that I have ever seen we headed to the stop for a bus to Vindolanda. We wandered Haltwhistle while waiting for the bus.

Vindolanda is the site of an archeological dig and a Roman fort. There have actually been 10 sucessive forts on this site and each was built on top of the preceding one. This site doesn't have the best preserved structures but it does have the best museum with the artifacts excavated at the site. It was interesting to see first hand the extreme conditions that legionaires worked under to ensure that the empire was safe from my Scotish ancestors.

From Vindolanda we hopped a bus to The Roman Army Museum. This was a short stop to watch a very good 3D movie about a legionaires life. From here we headed to Housestead. This is the site of the best preserved fort and reportedly some of the best views in England.

The tree above was featured in the movie "Robin Hood"

We discovered that we had an hour to kill wating for a bus that went to Haltwhistle. Fortunately, the Twice Brewed Inn was just down the road.

Debbie settled in with a glass of white wine and I had a Twice Brewed Bitters. While in the Inn we met two men from Manchester that we had spoken to earlier. They were great fun and were joined by a third friend who bought us another drink.

We managed to get back to the B&B and called a cab to take us to dinner. The special at the Milecastle Inn was roast minted lamb with Yorkshire pudding. While not quite as good as Paul's it was a meal that I will not soon forget. Debbie had bread and butter pudding for desert and I elected to have sticky toffee pudding with custard sauce. I am loving British cuisine.

We planned to walk back but it was very dark and the waitress informed us that it was about a one hour walk in the dark. We decided that discretion was the better part of valour and took a cab.

Tomorrow we are off to Edinburgh.
