Day 13 - St Andrews and the Alfred Dunhill Tournament

We had another good breakfast and headed out into the pouring rain to catch a bus to Waverley station. Waverley is massive but we easily found our platform and boarded the train. We sat in first class luxury while passing through places with names that were very familiar to me from my geneology.

No trains come into St Andrews. It is about a half hour bus trip from Leuchars to St Andrews but as it turns out with two people it is only about £4 more to ride in the leather seated luxury of an Audi cab which got us there in 10 minutes and dropped us dry at the door.

We arrived at our very nice B&B very early so we just dropped our bags. There was a very unhappy looking golfer in the Lobby and he handed us his unused passes to see the final round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. We ended up standing about 15 feet off the back of the 18th green with only a two foot picket fence between us and the golfers. I found out later that the very unhappy golfer, who made me very happy, was French pro Christian Cavaer.

The above picture is the 18th green with the cup towards the front. We were standing up against this fence and were almost hit when a player overshot the green. The above two images were both taken after the tournament when it was okay to take pictures.

The Old Course has fairways that are better than most of the greens that I have played on. As a matter in fact many pros used their putters from well off the green. It truely is an impressive course and the oldest in the world. I was going to play it until I found out that it costa £140, you have to reserve a year ahead and you need to have at least a 24 handicap. I lost on all three counts. Maybe next year.

We were exhausted so it was fish and chips for dinner and very early to bed.
