Day 11 - Another special day.

Today we leave the highlands and not without some tears but we have a full day to enjoy before that happens.

After another great breakfast at Queraing Guest house we piled on the bus and headed out of Portree. I should have mentioned earlier that like Wales (and Canada) Scotland is bilingual in the highlands. Gaelic(pronounced gaulic here) is the second language. All government signs are bilingual with Gaelic in one colour and English in another. In most cases the name is Gaelic and the English version helps us pronounce it.

Our first stop on our way back to Edinburgh was Eilean Donan Castle (Donan island castle). It has been used in 18 films. Most recently Elizabeth:The Golden Age and Made of Honour. It is the most photographed castle in the world and with good reason. It is pretty cool, inside and out.

From Eilean Donan we headed over to Loch Ness where we went on a one hour cruise. We didn't see Nessie but it was a nice hour relaxing in the sun. The hills on the shore were a bit higher but otherwise it was much like Ontario.

Next stop was a monument depicting seven severed heads and a knife in a hand. It represented a legend about revenge but it is far too long to put here.

We stopped at a Whiskey shop and Barney recommended two whiskeys. one was a 15year old from Glenfarclas which I purchased. It is really nice and not available in The LCBO. I discovered that the Taliskers that I so proudly purchased on Skye is. I may have to drink it so that I can bring something else home. ;-)

The rest of the day was relatively uneventful. We stopped a couple of times but nowhere very exciting. Debbie and I are about ready for a layover day. We are getting really tired.

We arrived back in Edinburgh, took a group picture and grabbed a bus to our B&B. We checked in and headed to dinner at the Salisbury Arms. On the way in we met Jill the landlady from our first stay in Edinburgh. I think that she was a little insulted that we weren't staying with her but we had a nice chat. There was going to be a long wait for a table for two so we joined up with two Australians. We had a roasted lamb shank that was to die for and tiramisu for dessert.

We were back in our room and in bed by 10:00 PM.

I sampled one of my small bottles of whiskey (10 yr old Dalwhinnie) Here's tae ye!
